About East Burnside

Southeast and Northeast Portland meet at East Burnside Street, often referred to simply as Burnside, which spans Buckman, Kerns, Laurelhurst and North Tabor neighborhoods and is home to arguably the best food in Portland. Much as the Burnside Bridge unites East and West Portland, E Burnside St ties together unique neighborhoods straddling SE and NE Portland with a variety of critically acclaimed and locally worshipped restaurants, cafes and bars, with nearby SE Pine and NE Glisan offering up their own must-see spots.

Travelling West on the Burnside Bridge the White Stag sign made famous by the TV show Portlandia can be seen, as can the stunning panoramic views of the Willamette offered on the Bridge.

To the East, Laurelhurst boasts the stunning 31-acre Laurelhurst Park complete with duck pond, off-leash dog areas, walking and running trails and family-friendly picnic spots. The Laurelhurst neighborhood is known for its beautiful homes, housing a diverse bunch attracted to the greenery and vintage vibe. Following Burnside to the West, Kerns and Buckman offer up celebrated restaurants and breweries along with stately historic Portland residential homes and locally-owned businesses.

Fun Facts

A city by any other name would smell as sweet? Well, Portland – also known as the Rose City – was this close to being dubbed Boston! Turns out, the battle for naming the city was between two residents, one  of Portland, Maine and the other from Boston, Massachusetts. Lo and behold, the two fought it out via a coin toss and the winner was Francis W. Pettygrove of Portland, Maine!

To Eat

Burnside offers several of Portland’s most highly regarded restaurants, ranging from the decidedly family-friendly to upscale gourmet, with a host of distinctly quirky Portland charmers and local favorites falling somewhere in between.

Screen Door combines a family-friendly atmosphere with critically acclaimed Southern comfort food, all with a distinctly PNW twist. Across the street, the intimate yet accommodating elegance of superb seasonal Italian at Luce has made it a best kept secret among Portland natives. For something more raucous, head to Fire on the Mountain for the best Buffalo wings Portland has to offer, either made with free-range chicken or a veggie variety (this is Portland after-all). Unassuming and delicious food cart Nong’s Khao Man Gai is also a SE Portland staple – offering Thai chicken and rice and happy hour drinks.

For something gourmet, Le Pigeon offers up noteworthy French cuisine, and down towards Burnside Bridge, Japanese restaurant Mirakutei is a local favorite home to upscale ramen and sushi in cozy surroundings.

The best Cuban food in Portland is found on the NE side of Burnside along Glisan St at Pambiche, a restaurant that manages to be trendy and upbeat yet thoroughly homey and inviting all at once. If the wait is too long at Pambiche, give one of the other fabulous eateries across the street a try – such as family-friendly Dove Vivi Pizza or raucous and comfy Migration Brewing.

To Do

The 1920s style Laurelhurst Theater is a fantastic sport for kids and adults alike – though fair warning its 21+ from 5:30pm onwards. The Burnside Skatepark is popular not only for its cool location under the Burnside Bridge, but also for its community-built charm.
