When Your New Year Resolution Is About To Fail

Here’s a fact: Most New Year’s resolution are broken even before we hit February.

At Livible we know how hard it is to stay on track with our New Year resolutions and we hear that from many of our customers. The thing is, most of us tend to fall off the resolution wagon so fast because of vague, unrealistic goals. When people feel demotivated, usually after the third week of January, the tendency is to throw in the towel – for good.

The week your New Year resolution dies, according to Facebook

Facebook has recently shared a very interesting report on how people stick to their exercise resolutions, WSJ wrote. To gauge the number of people working out, Facebook tracked check-ins made to places with ‘gym’ or ‘fitness’ in the name in the US, and the results are eye-opening.

As shown above, Facebook’s two-year data shows check-ins to facilities with “gym” or “fitness” in the name drop by 10% in February. The dip starts as early as third week in January, coming from a significant surge of people checking in after resolving exercise sessions by Jan 1st. Of course, the study is limited only to fitness centers and clubs with “gym” or “fitness” in their names. It also does not include exercising at home, walking or running, the WSJ post added further.

So what does this tells us about our ability to stay resolved and change ourselves for the better?

We all have noble intentions to work out this year. And if you feel you are starting to waver in this week on your resolutions, you’d probably in a dire need of collecting yourself again and reimagine your goals for this year.

Can we give ourselves another shot?

Will this be the year you start donating the wardrobe junks hiding in your suitcase? Or probably start to cook dinner more often? Actually pull your feet to visit the gym every Tuesday? We all love seeing ourselves in new angles, thus we resolve of doing new things (or maybe updating our old ones) every Jan 1st. We need to create goals that are tangible, actionable and more importantly, possible. The key is to start now, before your enthusiasm dies in February. Here’s how we do it:

Recreate this table and paste it on your wall. Make sure it is visible to get your attention. Review it each week and add a new set of weekly actions, whenever possible.

Giving up on your New Year resolution is nearly as easy as making them in the first place. This year, resolved to make yours stick.

Have ideas for making your New Year resolution real? We’d love to hear it in the comments!

Halloween: I’m going as a unicorn? How about you?

Halloween: I’m going as a unicorn? How about you?

It’s amazing how creative some people are. Or maybe it’s how much free time they have? You have to admit a very large guy in a bunny suit holding a duster AKA “dust bunny” is pretty clever. Ditto for the college student wearing both a lampshade and end table AKA “one night stand”. And these people can also turn their house into a full Game of Thrones set, complete with a fire breathing dragon/BBQ. That just wouldn’t end well for most people!

But now it’s all about their pets. And that’s where it really gets crazy! Dogs as another animal or your favorite superhero are done and done well. Harry Potter and Star Wars themes, check. Elvis or Lady Gaga, check. So who will have a better costume this Halloween, you or your pet?

Why isn’t Oktoberfest in October?

Why isn’t Oktoberfest in October?

That has always seemed strange so we consulted Wikipedia – of course – to find out why. It turns out that it was celebrated in October for the first hundred or so years, that being the anniversary of the marriage of King Ludwig I to Princess Therese on October 12, 1810 who started it to celebrate their nuptials. Held in Munich it involved a parade in traditional attire plus a horse race that persisted until 1960. It turns out that as Oktoberfest grew more popular and lasted longer the weather was better in September so they moved the date back – something Seattleites can totally relate to. While it’s great fun to drink lots of beer – 7 million liters were consumed at the Munich Oktoberfest last year – it tastes better out of the rain. Oktoberfest now officially starts mid-September and usually runs 17 days until the first Sunday in October.

And why were there almost as many dogs as people at both the Fremont and Kirkland Oktoberfest’s? Certainly some were there to drink beer with their owners and came dressed in matching lederhosen and stockings. One very happy fellow proudly announced that he’d trained his dog to take him home if he was drunk. A few minutes later he sat down and fell over with his dog licking his face without effect.

The wisdom of Mark Twain

The wisdom of Mark Twain

What are you plans this August? Be sure to get outside, after all your life, and your space, is for living.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~ Mark Twain (1835-1910)

July 4th Independence Day

July 4th Independence Day

July 4th is fast approaching, which means its about time to start planning your holiday! There are a ton of things going on in Seattle and the surrounding area for the long-weekend but we’ve decided to simplify things and head out for an old-fashioned picnic!

We’ve gathered up some handy tips to make this Independence Day one to remember:

  • Ditch the car…and grab a bike: nothing is sweeter than a cool West Coast breeze running through your hair and the feeling of the road beneath your feet! Clever people have come up with some awesome bike-picnic combos for packing and transporting your lunch. Our favourites include the 6-Bottle Holder from Firebox to safely carry beer or pop-bottles, BEG Picnic Rugs and the Eleven81 Bird Cage!
  • Pack a mason jar salad: not only portable, but easy and beautiful! Put your dressing at the bottom, fruits, veggies or nuts in the middle and lettuce on the top to avoid the dreaded soggy salad! Here’s a cool infographic showing you exactly how to do it.
  • Cold water on the go: grab a few plastic water bottles, fill them halfway and freeze overnight before your picnic adventure! Top them up with water when you’re ready to go for cold H20 throughout the day and make-shift icepacks to keep any perishables from getting too warm. The team at Storrage hopes you enjoy your weekend and think of us when summer is over. Our local storrage facilities are designed for winter bike storage and our containers can hold up to 40 pounds of seasonal gear like picnic baskets, reusable plastic plates and summer clothes!Follow us on Twitter and Facebook for more updates and tips on living well.

Bring on The Bikes!

Life is better with bikes, which is why offering affordable and secure bike storage has been part of our company since the start. Now that it’s warmer, and the streets are cleaner, we’re here to deliver your bikes back to your doorstep and get you moving on two wheels once again! Don’t move too fast though, you’ve got to first treat your ride with a little well deserved T.L.C. Here are some awesome ways to get your bike back in shape and ready for summer.

Bikes collect a ton of dust, dirt and debris over the winter months, whether stored indoors or outdoors, and it’s important to give your baby a good spring cleaning before you take it on a ride. While many methods, brands and systems exist for bike cleaning, almost all will agree that the first course of action is a good hosing. A simple spray from a garden hose or carwash (just a few bucks will do), should eliminate the bulk of your scrubbing and get you ready for tough to reach spots.

Next, find a towel, a toothbrush and a bike cleaner like Fenwicks or Simple Green and get scrubbing! Brake pads, chain, seat, frame, pedals and any other spot you can get into will make your ride safer and keep it on the road for years to come.

For the ultimate treatment, throw a coat of car wax on your frame to add lustre to your paint job and keep the sticky stuff (think bugs, road tar and tree droppings) from building up.

Now that your bike is in tip-top shape, invest in some indoor storage! Based out of Kingston, NY, this new product acts as a bike shelf that protects your apartment or office floor and keeps your paint job from wearing and your cables from kinking. As a bonus, the shelf acts as a cute spot to keep your helmet!
