Everybody loves a Makeover!

For most startups, attracting new customers is goal number one. And it’s always challenging, especially when introducing a brand new service, because it requires finding early adopters who are willing to be the first to try it out. When we launched Storrage a year ago we thought “this time it would be different” as literally every single person we talked to raved about what a great idea we had. What we quickly learned, however, is that getting the world to beat a path to your door is always hard work! Social media – technology enabled word of mouth – has also made it easier for new services that deliver great value for customers to prosper. New customers quickly embraced our service and rightfully demanded and received excellent service.

Over the past year we carefully expanded our service area in both geography and what we handled adding bikes to kayaks in response to customer requests. We also improved our mobile app with 10 new releases in response to customer requests and will shortly add a web version for the same reason. One of the areas we’ve had the most fun with customers is trying different ways to attract them. Our ecosystem initiative, including partnership with Value Village, is a great example that reflects how we and our customers feel about the environment. We are united in a drive to “keep it out of the landfill”.

We recently hosted an event for the Washington Multi-Family Housing Association at our office and warehouse in Seatac. We asked attendees, who work each day with people living in apartments, condominiums, townhouses and other multi-family dwellings, for their best ideas on getting them to give Storrage a try. Everyone admits they need our service, it’s convenient and affordable but many find it hard to get started so what should we do? They claim it was the wine we poured but two very clever attendees, Heather Edwards and Leslie Barry of Apartment Advantage, came up with a great idea that we decided to implement immediately.

What they suggested was fun and simple – both are really important for Storrage. So here is their idea: we all know someone – family or friends – whose closet could use a little help so why doesn’t Storrage do that for them. And make it a party to unveil the closet afterwards with wine (yes, a recurring theme) for some invited guests. We loved it, added some extras and then quickly tested it with two people. We learned a lot! One of the most interesting was that almost no one wanted to share their closet before the makeover. That works for us as we’re nutty about your privacy – we can’t see any of your information as it’s none of our business. The other was that it was essential to add chocolate for the party, so we did: our own, home grown Seattle Chocolates for all! And finally, the makeover process needs to be “kind” and take a maximum of one hour.

Our first test, Julie, lives in a modest one bedroom apartment. Her 6 foot by 6 foot closet was stuffed to the max – countless shoes on the top shelf alongside numerous jeans and t-shirts, work and play clothes intertwined and you couldn’t tell a shirt from a dress from a jacket. She was, in her words, “in a desperate need of a makeover, even an intervention”. It was a challenge to complete her makeover in our allotted one hour time to makeover her closet before her friends arrived, but we did it. We started by pulling out her clothing she was never going to wear (items she had had since college!) and put them directly into a Value Village donation bag so that Storrage could drop the donations off on the way back to the warehouse. Of course, we gave her a Value Village donation receipt! Next, we sorted through all of her clothing by type, re-organized it and put all back in her closet. We also sorted through her shoes and put the ones she would never wear again in the Value Village bag, which opened up a lot of space on her upper shelf. Once that was complete, we pulled her seasonal items that she wouldn’t be wearing and put those in Storrage containers. The end result was a beautifully organized closet. Julie was ecstatic that she would be able to find and wear outfits she had forgotten about because of the mess her closet had become. And, because Julie “won” her makeover, she also received three months free storage for her seasonal clothing we put in the containers, along with a few select gift cards to refresh her wardrobe. She celebrated with her friends with our complimentary wine and Seattle Chocolates, while her seasonal items were picked up and taken to the Storrage warehouse. Her guests also enjoyed a free Storrage container to keep.

Our second test, Jean, lives in a house with a fair amount of storage space. Her youngest is a high school senior so she’s planning the “downsize” in the near future and hopes to get a smaller place where she and her fiancé can walk to restaurants and shopping. Jean knows she won’t be able to move until she tames her closet and storage items. Her walk-in closet was about 15 feet long so there wasn’t any way to get through it in one hour so the focus was on one section with workout and seasonal clothes. Some great indicators that it’s time to part with your treasures: if friends want to borrow it for costume parties, if it still has tags from 2007 or if you burst into laughter when you pick it up. Plus it feels really good to donate items to Value Village knowing they will make a difference in someone else’s life. The hour flew by with the result three Value Village bags and one Storrage container. In a discussion with the primarily woman attendees afterwards, the suggestion was made that the place and person who’d really like something like this is “our garage and my husband. He dreams of parking the car there.” A superb idea (thanks Dina!).

Now, thanks to Heather and Leslie’s great idea and Julie and Jean’s awesome feedback we are thrilled to launch Closet Makeover. Here’s how it works:

  1. Anyone can nominate their friends or family members. Just tell us why you think they need or should win our free Closet Makeover and Party. They do need to live in our Seattle Service area.
  2. We’ll choose a winner each week and contact them to set a date for the makeover. We’ll also contact the friends or family the winner wants to invite them to the after party.
  3. The day of the Closet Makeover begins 5-6pm. Only the winner and Storrage Organizer will see the closet before and participate in the makeover. Once complete, the invited friends and family come for a party around 7-8pm, with wine, Seattle Chocolates and giveaways for all provided by Storrage and partners to unveil and celebrate the newly organized closet.

One of the things we found fascinating about each of our events, was that most of the guests wanted to purchase our Closet Makeover for themselves, friends or family. We love that idea so we’re also launching the Storrage Closet Makeover on Amazon Local with two price options; one without a party for $49 or one with a party for $99. Both include one month free storage for up to five containers. (It’s a great gift idea too.) Our Operations Director Mike had a chance to talk with Tanya after her recent move from townhouse to house.

How was your experience?

Our experience was perfect! I was able to choose a one hour window when I needed containers dropped off or picked up. I was sent a text before each delivery and pickup with an exact time when the driver would arrive. This was great! This moving process is so chaotic it is super awesome to get a head’s up when someone is on their way. We also donated some things to Value Village when my containers were picked up. This was a nice bonus saving me a trip!

What was the best thing about our service?

I love how easy it is to schedule a drop off or pick up with your app. This can be the hardest part, just getting a hold of someone to try and schedule something. But the app made it clear what times were available and it was easy to choose one. I wish every service were this easy to schedule!

What could we do to improve?

It would be really great if you could share your possessions. It would have been nice if my husband could have had access to update the contents as well.

Did anything surprise you?

I was surprised how easy Storrage was to use! The app is great! I really liked how easy it was to set each container with contents. Also you delivered exactly what you said you would. I really loved being able to trust the online claims made about your service.
I think it is a great idea and have already recommended Storrage to friends. We plan on using Storrage in the future!

Everyone’s favorite driver Eugene recently spoke with minimalist Meredith about her experience as a customer. That’s when we learned she’s a comedian. Really, so be sure to check out The Comedy Crater at the Blue Moon.

Why did you use Storrage?

I needed temporary storage. I heard the ads on Pandora and it made sense. The ease of delivery and pickup was far better than normal self-storage.

How’d we do?

Customer service was fantastic. The [Android] app was a little glitchy to start but you fixed that with the next release. I’m a busy person so the ease of use was the best thing about your service. I’m usually very opinionated but there were no real stand out surprises.

What could we do to make it better?

Keep upgrading the app. Maybe add a reminder for the monthly storage billing, preferably by text.

Would you recommend Storrage to your friends and family?

Yes, I’d give you a 10 for service and use you again for sure if I have the need.

Customer Story: Meet Terry Drayton and Learn About his Recent Move!

We are very excited to share our most recent interview! It’s with one of our own, Storrage CEO, Terry Drayton, who recently moved. We wanted to learn a little bit more about how he found the moving experience to be – and what better than to ask a true expert in storage!

Terry Drayton is a pioneer in seeing what’s possible and turning that into world class businesses. He has a particular interest in technology, including the latest and greatest in mobile apps and cloud services. When asked about what motivated him to start Storrage, he mentioned products and services which his very own family could use. And that is just what he did in his recent move!

Tell us a little bit about your recent move! Why were you moving and what was the most exciting and most difficult part about moving?

One of the reasons we originally started Storrage was to allow us to downsize. We wanted a smaller, simpler house – without formal living and dining rooms that we never used, fewer bedrooms and a smaller, lower maintenance yard. Of course we appreciated that a smaller house also had lower property taxes, utility payments, etc. so our cost and complexity went way down. After talking about it since our youngest went away to college two years ago, we finally made the decision to move this summer when our eldest graduated from college and got a job in San Francisco. With no chance for the millennial move back, it was time! We sold our great family house quickly and then got lucky finding our new place in the neighborhood!

What items did you pack first? Why?

First up was the “decluttering” process orchestrated by our fantastic realtor, Wendy Lister and her team. That was removing all the personal items to make our house easier to sell. We also removed a lot of items from our storage room and garage including decorations (Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas) and some sports equipment (skis and snowboards). We ended up with 28 containers and 6 oversized items, mainly for snow sports!

What items did you pack last? Why?

Last was after we’d sold our house and before the movers came when we cleaned out the attic and the garage. It’s the items we’d forget about and haven’t touched since our last move 12 years ago. We ended up donating a lot of stuff to our partners at Value Village. We did it last as we wanted to get the house ready for the cleaners.

Explain how you used Storrage to assist you in your move?

We couldn’t have done it without Storrage. Some of that was knowing we didn’t have to deal with all our items right away. A great example is our library, where we didn’t have time to sort through all the items, so we packed hundreds of books into 15 containers. In a few months we’ll get them delivered to our new place and sort through them then!

Another was knowing we have a permanent, inexpensive “store room” that we can have delivered at any time. We have 97 items in storage that’s costing us about $200/month, which is less than renting a self-storage unit. Plus we can get next day pickup and delivery! That allowed us to purchase a smaller place that we would otherwise have needed.

Any tips you could offer fellow movers?

If you use Storrage, and our mobile application, take pictures of the items before you put them into the containers, use folders and do one room at a time. Folders are an easy way to organize groups of similar items. It’s particularly easy to get them redelivered as you can just click on the “all” button. The key is to complete one room at a time instead of spreading yourself all over the place. There is a great feeling of satisfaction as you empty a room. We did multiple pickups of 15-20 containers, which helped us see what was left.

We recently spoke to Joni, a working mom who has a particular interest in meditation, yoga, healthy eating, and hiking on her experience with Storrage Seattle!

In a few sentences, could you describe your experience using the Storrage boxes, the app and the driver?

At first I had a few of issues with the app, but I finally ordered the boxes. They arrived and actually sat unused for at least 4 weeks because we had just moved and it took us forever to unpack. When I finally got around to scheduling a pickup, the driver was really cool, a super nice guy. I sent him to the wrong address and he texted me, found the right address and even worked with our concierge to get the boxes picked up!

What items did you put into Storrage?

We moved into a 2 bed, 2 bath condo downtown. We had no office and no garage, so we put files, back taxes and tools into Storrage.

Would you recommend Storrage to your friends and family?

Yes, I would recommend Storrage for anyone downsizing. It gives you the freedom to live with less stuff in smaller places without having to give up things you need.

Meet Spencer, UW Intern and Storrage User!

Spencer is a business major at the University of Washington who lives off-campus in a 7 bedroom house, along with 6 other roommates. Studying business, with a focus on entrepreneurship, has led Spencer to accept a student internship here at Storrage, where he has been an important facilitator in the first ever UW Challenge.

We talked to Spencer about the challenge and his experience with Storrage…

What is the UW Challenge?

“The UW Challenge is a “do good” challenge for the Greek Community that gives fraternities and sororities a chance to win $500 for their chapter.

As the student intern for Storrage I’ve been walking around the Greek community, dropping by information at all of the houses, and talking to students to spread the word. There are a lot of out of state students at UW without a solution as to where to keep their belongings for the summer, so I tried to inform them about our services as well as let them know how they can in turn give back by participating in the challenge.”

How did you find out about Storrage?

“I found out about Storrage through the Lavin Entrepreneurship Program at the UW. I checked out the website and realized that not only was I interested in interning, but that I also could really use this service when I moved out. The price-point is dead on for a college student and takes a huge amount of the hassle out of the moving process.”

In a few sentences, could you describe your experience using the Storrage boxes, the app and the driver?

“The experience has been awesome! The app made it very easy to schedule a delivery date for the original boxes, then once I got them and started packing my stuff, I was able to jot down notes about what was in each box. Storrage employees were very helpful throughout the whole process. They made sure that the boxes I received were correctly scanned into my account and gave me some bubble wrap to make sure my plates were secure and safe.”

What did you put into Storrage?

“I put my home and cooking supplies that I didn’t need while living at home for the summer, including pots & pans, an xbox, lots of power cords, a rug, bedding, plates, and a few other small items from my desk. I also put in some winter boots that I don’t plan on wearing during these warmer months.”

Did this improve your living and studying experience at home?

“At one point during the school year I had all of my shoes sitting in the corner of my room near my dresser. I couldn’t open my bottom drawer without moving at least 3 pairs of shoes out of the way, only to put them right back in the same spot and repeat the process day after day. Putting these things in Storrage made my morning routine so much easier. I didn’t realize how the little things add up until Storrage took the of stress out of my life.”

How did Storrage make your move-out easier?

“I didn’t have to worry about going to the store to buy cardboard boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap or worry about the 10 trips i’d have to make back and forth from my room to the car. I began packing my stuff in the boxes and had the driver come load them onto the truck.”

Would you recommend Storrage to other students?

“Absolutely! Any and all of my friends that are out of state or live a few hours away could really use this service for their study abroad and summer needs. No one wants to rent an entire storage locker only to fill it ¼ full and have to deal with the hassle of driving to and from the site.”

We talked to Melissa from Queen Anne about her experience with Storrage. Read on to learn more!

Describe your experience using the Storrage App.

“Getting started couldn’t have been any easier. I simply downloaded the app, entered my info, hit “request”, selected the number of boxes, picked a time and they were delivered a day later.“

What items did you put into Storrage?

“I put some things I use frequently, but am not currently using. Things like, computer equipment, cables, boxes, DVDs, CDs, books, seasonal items, hats, off-season clothes and crafts. Storing these things helped me to free up almost all of my drawer space, which helps me feel a lot less cluttered. Things in the house that didn’t have a “home” before, now have a place to live. I’m more relaxed because there’s less clutter and my small, one-bedroom apartment doesn’t feel as cramped.“

What are you favourite Seattle activities in the summer and how has Storrage helped you to enjoy them?

“I love outdoor festivals, shopping, dinner and drinks on patios and being out on the water. In the city, i spend Sunday mornings at Pike Place Market soaking in the lovely smells and buying groceries, and then over to Fremont Market to shop for antiques! One of the things I’ve noticed, is that coming home from a trip is easier. I have a place for my suitcase, and more room in my closet for any new clothes or shoes I’ve bought. At the end of the day, I just feel more relaxed knowing things are in order.”

Would you recommend Storrage to your friends and family?

“I would definitely recommend Storrage to my friends and family – and i already have! It really makes sense for people who live in the city, have a small car or no car, and want the convenience of not having to lug everything into a storage unit. It’s cheaper and easier. I’m definitely more of a minimalist and any type of clutter annoys me in my day-to-day living. It’s so great to be able to open a drawer and have things organized, or look under the bed and finally not see those things that shouldn’t be there.

I love that I don’t feel tied to my home. I don’t feel the need to “clean out” things, or de-clutter as much as before – everything has a place.”
